We have partnered with Poutini Ngāi Tahu to prepare a submission for reconsideration of concession to build Waitaha Hydro Scheme in South Westland. We provided our submission to the Department of Conservation on 31 May 2022.
The Minister of Conservation, the Hon. Poto Williams, is currently reviewing our reconsideration. In order to provide the Minister with sufficient time to comprehensively review and seek advice on our submission, the reconsideration documents will be made public when the Department of Conservation and the Minister of Conservation decide to do so.
Westpower and Poutini Ngāi Tahu are jointly committed to be open and transparent throughout the reconsideration process.
We will share our submission with you as soon as it is released by the Department of Conservation.

“The largest investment in a renewable energy on the West Coast in a generation has taken a major step forward today” says Westpower chief executive, Peter Armstrong.
In August 2019 Minister for the Environment, David Parker, declined Westpower’s application for concessions from the Department of Conservation to construct and operate a run-of-river hydro scheme on the Waitaha River, about 36 kilometres south of Hokitika on the South Island’s West Coast.
We will be providing more information in the weeks and months ahead.
